Happy Ashenda to the Tigray community, from all of us at the Alliance of Genocide Victim Communities.

Ashenda celebrates the beauty, dignity, freedom and strength of Tigrayan women and girls. This year, its joy is shadowed by deeply precarious circumstances in Tigray. The main public gathering in Mekelle was cancelled amid renewed drone strikes and fears of further conflict—a painful reminder that the people of Tigray are still being denied the peace and security they deserve.

Here in Toronto, AGVC was grateful to join the Tigray community in celebrating its extraordinary culture, faith and resilience. Even in uncertain times, Ashenda carries forward the spirit of a people who refuse to allow violence to extinguish their joy or erase their traditions.

May Tigrayan women and girls everywhere soon be able to celebrate Ashenda freely, joyfully and safely—in Tigray and throughout the world.

Ruhus Be’al Ashenda! Happy Ashenda!
