John Jonaid embodies lived experience, advocacy insight, and narrative power. Having fled persecution in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, he traversed India, China, and Indonesia before settling in Canada through the Private Sponsorship of Refugees program in 2021 idrc-crdi.ca. Now based in Ottawa, his journey fuels a passionate commitment to refugee empowerment, inclusive policy, and amplifying marginalized voices.

Civic Engagement & Advocacy Impact
As a fellow in the Parliamentary Centre’s Knowledge for Democracy Myanmar (K4DM) initiative, John helped organize Canada-wide parliamentary briefings in June 2023, leading to petitions urging Canadian support for democracy and Rohingya rights idrc-crdi.ca. Reflecting on this pivotal role, he said:
